 January 1924   Born in Hugwang Li, Sinan-Gun, Jeolla Namdo.
 December 1943   Graduates from Mokpo Commercial High School.
 1961 ~ 1972   Elected to the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th National Assembly.
 April 1971   Runs in the 7th Presidential Election but loses.
 October 1972   Exiled in Japan in opposition to the Yushin Constitution.
 August 8, 1973   Kidnapped from a Tokyo hotel by Korean CIA agents and released on August 13.
 March 1976   Announces the March 1st Declaration for Democratization.Imprisoned until December of 1978.
 September 1980   Sentenced to death by the new military government.Commuted to life imprisonment in January of 1981.
 December 1982   Forced to leave for the United States; returns in February of 1985.
 1987, 1992   Runs in the 13th and 14th Presidential Elections but loses.
 1988 ~ 1992   Elected to the 13th and 14th National Assembly.
 December 1997   Runs in the 15th Presidential Election and wins.
                            Marks the first peaceful transfer of power between rival parties.
 February 1998   Sworn in as the 15th President of the Republic of Korea.
 June 2000   Holds the first inter-Korean summit in 55 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula.
                    Announces the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration.
 December 2000   Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
 February 2003   Retires from the Office of President.
                          While in office, implements policies to realize democracy, a transparent market-economy,
                          knowledge-informatization, a productive welfare framework and reconciliation between South and North Korea.
 February 2003 ~   Delivers lectures at universities and research institutes in Korea and overseas.
                             Dedicates time to writing books.
